Prof. Dr. Osman Civil was born in Trabzon in 1974. The medical education was completed in 2003 at Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Medicine, after which the general surgery residency was completed at Kartal Dr. Lütfi Kırdar Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi and the title of general surgery specialist was received. Before the specialty training, Prof. Dr. Civil gained broad clinical experience working as a general practitioner in the emergency departments of state hospitals in the provinces of Bayburt and Kocaeli. The specialty thesis, titled “Bipolar radyofrekans cihazı (Habib®) yardımıyla gerçekleştirilen karaciğer rezeksiyonları”, was prepared under the supervision of the surgeon Dr. Metin Kement and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Öncel, which focused attention early on innovative approaches in surgical techniques.

In the post-specialty career, Prof. Dr. Civil worked at Gümüşhane State Hospital between 2012 and 2014 and at Derince Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi between 2014 and 2019, and since 2019 has continued working at the General Surgery Clinic of İstanbul Medipol University. The title of associate professor was received in 2020; academic work continued at the same university, and an application for a professorship post has been submitted.

Prof. Dr. Osman Civil has concentrated, in the post-specialty period, on the surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancers, stomach and esophageal cancers, pancreatic and hepatobiliary system cancers, thyroid and endocrine diseases, abdominal wall hernias, obesity and metabolic diseases, and perianal diseases. In these treatments minimally invasive surgical techniques (laparoscopic and robotic methods) are used as a priority, and modern surgical approaches that provide faster recovery, less postoperative pain and a lower risk of complications are applied effectively. Giving priority to laparoscopic techniques in esophageal and gastric surgery, hepatobiliary system surgery and colorectal cancer surgery makes Prof. Dr. Osman Civil one of the surgeons who stand out in the field.

Many articles have been published in national and international peer-reviewed journals, and these works have received a significant number of citations. Prof. Dr. Civil is also a member of leading professional organizations such as the Turkish Surgical Association, the Turkish Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery, the Endocrine Surgery Society and the Obesity Surgery Society. Prof. Dr. Osman Civil aims to reflect academic knowledge and broad clinical experience in patient care and to provide up-to-date, patient-centered health care based on scientific foundations, and continues clinical practice as one of the pioneers of modern surgery with minimally invasive surgical techniques.
