Education and experience
Prof. Dr. Leylagül Kaynar is a hematology specialist with more than twenty years of academic, clinical and clinical research experience in adult hematology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Prof. Dr. Kaynar completed the medical education at the Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, graduating with honors. Received the internal medicine specialty training and the hematology subspecialty training at the same university. In 2011, worked as an observer in the Duke University Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplantation unit, developing international experience in the field of bone marrow transplantation.
In the academic career, received the title of Associate Professor (Doçent) in 2012 and Professor in 2018. Served as a faculty member and as Head of the Hematology Division at the Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine; between 2017 and 2020, served as Head of the Hematology Department at King Hamad University Hospital / Bahrain Oncology Center in Bahrain and took an active role in the establishment and operation of the bone marrow transplant center.
Since 2021, has been working as Professor and head of department / division at the Hematology Division of the Istanbul Medipol University Faculty of Medicine; runs adult hematology and transplantation services as program director at the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Center of Medipol Mega University Hospital. The clinical practice covers acute leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, haploidentical transplantation, GVHD, transplant infections, relapse management, apheresis and cellular therapies.
Prof. Dr. Kaynar, a transplant program leader, argues that hematopoietic stem cell transplantation programs must be managed not only for clinical success but together with donor safety, cell collection and processing procedures, traceability and continuous quality improvement systems. Served as Director of the Stem Cell Processing Laboratory and Director of Apheresis at Erciyes University; served on the Apheresis Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Türkiye. Since 2025, has been taking an active part, as a JACIE inspector, in international transplant quality and accreditation processes.
Has broad experience as Principal Investigator (PI) and Sub-Investigator (Sub-I) in clinical research. Has taken part in Phase 2 and Phase 3 randomized, double-blind, open-label, extension, observational and post-authorization studies in various hematological diseases, including AML, CLL/SLL, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, multiple myeloma, TTP, CML and infection prophylaxis after allogeneic transplantation. Maintenance therapy in FLT3/ITD-positive AML and clinical research in GVHD are among the special interests.
Scientific output is concentrated especially on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, AML, GVHD, CMV and fungal infections, apheresis, post-transplant cytopenias and cellular therapies. Appears as a speaker and researcher at national and international scientific meetings; maintains active scientific interaction with professional bodies such as EBMT, ASH, the International Myeloma Working Group, the Turkish Society of Hematology and the Turkish Apheresis Society.
In the clinical approach, the aim is to evaluate each patient individually in terms of disease biology, age, comorbidities, transplant eligibility, donor characteristics and treatment goals, and to combine current scientific evidence with a multidisciplinary team approach and international transplant standards.
Key areas of expertise: Hematology, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, HSCT, HCT, allogeneic transplantation, autologous transplantation, haploidentical transplantation, AML, FLT3/ITD, GVHD, apheresis, extracorporeal photopheresis, cellular therapies, JACIE.
