Education and experience

From source

Born in Merzifon in 1952, Professor Nevzat Tarhan graduated from Kuleli Military High School in 1969 and from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1975. After training at GATA and military service with units in Cyprus and Bursa, he qualified as a specialist in psychiatry at GATA in 1982. Having worked as a hospital physician in Erzincan and Çorlu, he became Assistant Professor (Yardımcı Doçent) (1988) and then Associate Professor (1990) at GATA Haydarpaşa, where he also served as clinic director. He was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1993 and to professor in 1996. From 1996 to 1999 he was a faculty member at Yüzüncü Yıl University and an expert witness at the Council of Forensic Medicine (Adli Tıp Kurumu). He subsequently retired at his own request. In 1998 he became the Türkiye representative of the Memory Center of America. In 2006 he founded NPİSTANBUL Hospital and, in 2011, Üsküdar University, to which he donated all of his assets.

Professor Nevzat Tarhan has channelled the expertise in psychiatry that he has built up over many years of dedicated work and research into nearly 300 research articles, 142 of them indexed in WOS (Web of Science), and more than 100 books and book chapters. His publications have received nearly 6,000 citations, with an h-index of 41 on Google Scholar and 24 on Scopus. Through this body of work he has reached an audience of more than one million readers in Türkiye who follow him in both broadcast and print media. Some of his books have been translated into English as well as Bulgarian, Indonesian, Persian, Albanian and Azerbaijani. (As of November 2024)

Professor Tarhan approaches his work with great seriousness and meticulous care. The main foundation of his diligence and achievements is his philosophy of life and his faith-based outlook. His view of life, which is not confined to this world but embraces both this world and the hereafter, stems from his awareness that in everything he does he stands in the presence of his Creator. This is what leads him to present to his readers the tenets of faith grounded in inquiry, observation and proof, drawing on the testimony of the universe, engaging with science and relating it to the attributes of God reflected in the universe. He is one of the rare scholars who have succeeded in presenting the universe and the Qur’an as mutually supportive. Besides embodying the identity of a scholar in his own life, he has made it his guiding principle to pass on to others the truths he has learnt.

The source of this distinctive outlook is the Holy Qur’an, which he has read since his youth and taken as the guide of his life. Like other young people questioning the meaning of life and existence, during his university years he too sought answers to questions such as ‘Random existence, the meaning of life, Darwinism, why does evil exist, the need for religion, the psychology of belief, is there life after death, and how do the human mind and soul find fulfilment?’, and he has shared these answers with his readers, explaining them with reference to the Qur’an and supporting them with scientific research.

As a psychiatrist, Professor Tarhan also observes social life closely; drawing on a careful analysis of it, he consistently highlights the importance of ‘Social Psychology’ in the media.

Professor Nevzat Tarhan, whose qualities extend well beyond those described above, has always made investment in people his goal and has devoted his material and spiritual resources to that end. Much of society has witnessed everything he has achieved. Through his conduct and his work, he makes clear that he will pursue the same goals, guided by his faith-based outlook, for the rest of his life.

Professor Tarhan, who donates all of his income to the TARHAN-İDER Foundation that he founded, has sold more than one million books. He speaks English and German and is the father of two children. His family tree, which goes back 1,400 years, was published as a book in 2017.

Founded without any public funding or allocation, through the donation of all his assets, Üsküdar University today has more than 24,000 students and continues its work as a ‘Brain Base’ training the scientists who will be the Nobel candidates of the future. Thanks to the global vision of Professor Nevzat Tarhan and his team, the university successfully represents Türkiye on the world stage as the first and only Turkish university to have taken part in the G20/N20 Summits.

Presentations on ‘Computational Psychiatry and Future Perspectives’ given at the 2020 congress of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), one of the world’s most prestigious psychiatric associations, by specialists from Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Hospital under the leadership of Professor Nevzat Tarhan were selected as one of the 12 lessons that the APA offered its members each month during 2021.

Professor Tarhan currently serves as Founding Rector and Chair of the Senior Management Board of Üsküdar University, and as Chair of the Board of Directors of NPİSTANBUL Hospital, Türkiye’s first neuropsychiatric hospital.
